Consumer products brand Tecno has ranked 6th in the just-released 2021 Africa’s Best Brands rankings.

This is the fifth consecutive year that the flagship Transsion Holdings brand is featuring among the top 6 of the 100 featured brands on the continent, thanks to a survey conducted by market research company Geopoll in 28 countries throughout the continent’s five economic regions (which account for over 80% of the population and 80% of the continent’s GDP) and subsequent analysis by Kantar and Brand Leadership.

Tecno’s rise to dominate the brand charts on the continent over the last half-decade mirrors its performance in the overall phone market on the continent where its smartphones and feature phones have continuously put it among the top device brands plying their trade on the continent.

In April, research firm Counterpoint Research reported that the brand had unseated Samsung to become Africa’s top smartphone brand, increasing its market share in 2020 by one percentage point to 18% compared to the previous year and, within the unique circumstances of 2020: a global health crisis that saw smartphone shipments drop by just under 7% year-over-year.

The brand prides its decade-long association with the continent, which has seen it take a couple of firsts, as having been key in its eventual domination of the market and rise in stature of its brand, once unheard off in a market that had previously been the hold of Nokia and Samsung.

“…Tecno was the first to launch dual SIM cards in Africa over a decade ago to solve the expensive data-roaming problem and the complexity of mobile connections. Tecno was also the first to develop longer-lasting batteries that provided 72 hours of battery life to solve the power supply issues. The brand was the first to bring dark-skin camera solutions and…” a statement from Tecno reads.
