UK issues travel advisory to citizens visiting Kenya

Britain has issued a travel advisory to its citizens visiting Kenya, warning that terrorists might carry out more attacks in the country.

British nationals have been advised to be vigilant when visiting places frequented by foreigners. Such places include hotels, night clubs, shopping malls and coastal regions especially beaches and government buildings.

They added that churches and mosques also remain areas the terrorists might target.

the British warning also listed north eastern counties of Mandera, Garissa as well as lower parts of Lamu and Tana River counties. British nationals are advised to avoid these places unless it is essential to visit them.

The advisory which last updated on Saturday by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), does not include, Lamu Island Manda that was raided by terrorists last week.

Safari destinations and beach resorts at the Coast were also excluded with CFO advising against all but areas within 60km of Kenya – Somalia boarder.

CFO  also indicated that close to 190,000 british bnationals who visit kenya annually have not complained of experiencing troubles.

The raid on a Military barrack in Manda last week brought back to the spotlight one of the country’s top tourist destinations.

The vulnerability of some tourism destinations to militant attacks saw the industry suffer massive losses five years ago due to travel advisories issued by Kenya’s major tourism source markets.

UK was Kenya’s fourth leading source market last year with 181,484 visitors, behind USA, Uganda and Tanzania.
