The Tecno Camon 17 Pro is the hero member of the Camon 17 series.
As such, coupled with the price tag, a whole Kshs 22,800, there is a lot to expect from the device. And, a lot it delivers.
Here’s a quick rundown of some of the standout features of the device:
1. Design
To say that the Tecno Camon 17 Pro is easy on the eyes might be an understatement. The device is a looker!
As noted in our first impressions piece, it has a shiny back that, thanks to its near-matte feel, won’t blind you as a glossy alternative would. A solid metal frame with matching colour (what Tecno is calling Ice Silver) adequately complements the entire design language.
It also curves nicely to make handling easier and what is otherwise a very large device – it’s a 6.8-inch device, after all – not feel like it is, a stark contrast to the wieldy Infinix Hot 10T.
2. Storage
Tecno put a whopping 256 gigabytes of onboard on this device – the most I have ever seen on any Tecno smartphone, not just those in the Camon series – and it’s perhaps the best thing they have done. I mean, it’s only fair that they pair a killer photography experience with as much storage as they are able to pack inside. Especially now that the one reliable cloud backup option has gone away.
3. Display
Tecno created a winning formula with the Camon 16 series last year – on the Camon 16 Premier – and they have stuck with it on the Camon 17 Pro. So, you get a Full HD+ display with a high refresh rate (90Hz) just like you did with the Camon 16 Premier last year. And, it’s a hair smaller. That isn’t much but, compared with the huge device I interacted with last year, you get to appreciate the approach.
And, for devices in its class, this is as good as good gets. There’s a device that costs even more and doesn’t get this.
4. Performance
There’s 8 GB of memory, there’s an Helio G95 chipset from MediaTek and there’s what you want as a user. What stands between you and getting it? Nothing except Tecno’s HiOS. It’s still not yet toned down but it doesn’t get in the way of you getting what you want from the device.
As I can attest, there isn’t much that you’d want to do that you can’t. The device will heat up a little when you spend 40 minutes in a Twitter Space (so far, which device doesn’t do that?) but, unlike others, it won’t make things laggy and hang up on you just as you have been made a speaker. What I am saying is, here’s a smartphone for your next Twitter Space for a lot less.
5. Fast-charging
25W fast-charging isn’t the fastest that we have seen (at the time of writing this some device maker has achieved 200W charging so…) but it comes in handy because you are sure that the monstrous 5,000mAh battery will be good to go by the time you are done showering and taking your breakfast before dashing out in the morning. No need to leave the device charging overnight.
