A cooperative banking dialogue involving chief executive officers from across Africa convened in Nairobi on 23 April 2026, where discussions centered on member-driven financial systems, innovation in savings and credit models, and regional collaboration within the cooperative sector.

Co-operative Bank of Kenya (Co-op Bank) hosted the delegation from the African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA) at its headquarters, Co-op House, as part of a structured engagement on cooperative banking operations and institutional development.
The visiting delegation was received by Mr Samuel Birech, Director – Retail Banking, and Mr Vincent Marangu, Director – Cooperatives Banking, representing the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr Gideon Muriuki, CBS, MBS.
The engagement brought together senior cooperative banking executives from multiple African markets to examine operational approaches used in scaling member-based financial services and strengthening institutional efficiency within cooperative frameworks.
Discussions focused on cooperative banking models that support member-centric financial inclusion, with particular attention to service delivery structures that integrate savings mobilization, credit access and enterprise financing within cooperative systems.
Participants reviewed approaches used to strengthen governance, operational resilience and service innovation across cooperative financial institutions operating in diverse regulatory and market environments.
The delegation also examined the role of digital financial platforms in expanding access to cooperative services, particularly in markets where mobile and agency banking channels have become central to financial inclusion strategies.
Attention was also given to cross-border collaboration opportunities aimed at harmonizing operational standards and strengthening capacity within cooperative savings and credit institutions across Africa.
Following the discussions at Co-op House, the delegation undertook a branch visit in Nairobi to observe retail banking operations and service delivery processes within Co-operative Bank’s cooperative banking segment.
The visit provided exposure to frontline banking systems supporting cooperative-linked customers, with emphasis on transaction processing, customer service models and integration of cooperative financial products within mainstream banking infrastructure.
The engagement reflects continued efforts by cooperative financial institutions across Africa to share technical knowledge and operational experience in response to evolving financial sector dynamics and growing demand for inclusive financial services.
Co-operative Bank maintains a dedicated cooperative banking division aligned to Kenya’s wider cooperative movement, which remains a key contributor to savings mobilization and credit access across multiple economic sectors.
The ACCOSCA visit adds to ongoing regional collaboration efforts aimed at strengthening institutional capacity within cooperative financial systems while supporting knowledge transfer across African markets engaged in member-based banking models.
