The Jubilee government has not been one to keep its promises especially to the common mwananchi from failed laptops, to failed stadia buildings, to the big four agenda which is only still on paper and many more that Kenyans have heard to listen to the administration promise but fail to deliver.
But this time they have gone a notch higher and President Kenyatta launched an express highway that is to be built in the space of the next 6 years that will help to decongest Nairobi and give commuters a good and easy way of traveling.
The 27 km stretch of tarmac will cost taxpayers close to 60 billion shillings. The cost per kilometer is over 2 billion shillings, unlike the Thika Road Highway that consumed 620 million per kilometer. This cost makes it the most expensive road on the planet.
This venture is under a public-private partnership where the people who will be used for this construction will be locally sourced under the PPP partnership. The stretch of road will start from Mlolongo to JKIA then will pass through CBD and then stretch towards Westlands to Waiyaki way.
A major part of this road will be elevated so as to avoid the congestion that occurs along where the current roads are. The public is requested not to worry as the expressway will not touch Uhuru park so there should be no cause for alarm.
The path will at different points have an 8, 6 and 4 lane depending on the location of the road. It is estimated that it will have over 25000 users daily and each user will spend 600/= on it since there will be toll tickets to be picked after a designated amount of distance.
The road is expected to have financial gain for the government as well as sort the congestion problem along the major roads in the CBD. The first phase of construction has already begun and the first tender has been awarded to the Chinese Roads And Bridges Construction Company. This first phase is responsible for the demolitions of several buildings in Nairobi including the children’s park known as Lunar Park.
