Kevin Kiarie Strikes Gold Again as Kenya’s Skating Star Shines in Cairo

Kenyan freestyle skater Kevin Kiarie on Saturday secured gold at the African Skating Championships held in Cairo, Egypt marking another continental breakthrough in a sport where he has rapidly built a competitive profile over recent international appearances.

The victory adds to his earlier success in Benin, where he won gold in freestyle battle and silver in classic slalom at the International Skating Challenge in Cotonou, positioning him among the most visible Kenyan athletes in freestyle slalom skating on the African circuit.

The Cairo result continues a trajectory shaped by gradual progression from local training grounds in Nairobi to international competition, following his first major global exposure at the 2025 Inline Freestyle World Championships in Singapore, where he placed 18th out of 22 competitors.

That earlier event exposed gaps in equipment and preparation, but also marked a turning point after he transitioned to improved gear provided through private sponsorship, which he later credited for stabilising his performance and allowing him to compete more effectively at elite level.

Kiarie’s rise has been driven by a combination of personal investment, informal fundraising, and external sponsorship support, reflecting the limited institutional backing available for niche sports such as freestyle slalom skating in Kenya. He has previously described balancing full-time training with coaching work, while relying on private support to access international competitions, a structure that has not prevented him from recording consistent progress on the African stage.

His latest win in Cairo strengthens his position as one of Kenya’s leading figures in competitive skating and adds momentum to calls within sections of the sporting community for greater formal support for emerging disciplines. It also places him on a steady competitive path following a series of back-to-back international appearances that have shifted him from a domestic enthusiast to a continental title contender within a short competitive window.
